The first thing that you need to do to get free web site traffic is to do your keyword research. This way you can make sure that people are actually searching for the term that you will be competing for.
You are also going to want to find out how much competition there is for that keyword. It may have a a lot of searches but it if the competition is too high, you will never get ranked on the first page of Google.
The first thing that you should do is open the Google external keyword tool or the Google searched base keyword tool. Both these sites can give you ideas of keywords and the amount of monthly traffic.
For the quickest results to get our webpage ranked and positioned on the first page of Google we are looking for keywords that are searched between 2400 and 3600 times a month.
Now we go to the Google take the list that we acquired and search for each term that is on our list with quotes around the keyword that you are testing. This will give you the exact number of competing sites for that phase. If you do not use the quotes it will return the broad keyword match. A broad keyword may come back with a million competing sites. But if you use the quotations it may come back with 34,000. This is something that we can compete with.
We are typically looking for a site with under 35,000 competing websites.
Now that we have a keyword that has enough traffic we need to figure out how competitive the top 10 people are in Google. We do this by first downloading the SEO pluggin for Firefox. This tool will give us the number a lot of information on how hard it will be to crack into the top 10.
First we need to look on how many page back links there are. This will give you a good indication of what you are up against. If the domain age has been around for awhile it will also make it more difficult to top. Finally if the site is listed in DMOZ or Yahoo, Google will give the site more weight as well.
Lastly what you may want to do is look at the webpage source. Google likes it when web designers make it easy for them. You should make sure that when you are creating the webpage that you include the keyword in the url, title, description, header and have it appear a couple more times in the webpage.
You can check this by opening the webpage and clicking view on the menu bar and source if you are using internet explorer. If you are using Firefox you will want to view in the menu bar and then click "Page Source." You should be able to find the information there.
Another thing that you will want to check is how many Adword advertisements are showing up. If there is none you may want to consider selling something different. If there is a fair amount you can be more sure that this is a profitable keyword.
